Skorpion Quadline Skates

When I heard that strap-on skates were coming back into fashion, my mind zoomed back to the seventies when I shared a single pair of metal and leather roller skates with my four siblings. They could be adjusted using a wingnut to fit all our feet, so they were very good value.

These new Skorpion Quadline skates are way cooler than my old ones, but they can still be adjusted in size, which will be a relief to any parents of growing kids. They're more expensive than most skates, but they will at least grow with your child, so there will be no need to replace them every year as you would with other fixed-size skates. They're not just for the kids though - they make ideal skates for oldies like me returning to skating to keep fit and have fun.

Skorpions look very different to traditional quad skates. The wheels are much bigger than normal skates which, coupled with their spring loading means they don't need a perfectly smooth surface to run on. This makes them ideal for getting around in the street or in parks (and even on carpets at home if you're too shy to practice in public).

They are designed to be worn with your own shoes. The foot sits with a low centre of gravity between the widely spaced wheels, which makes the skates very comfortable and stable. Although they're marketed at experienced skaters, because of their stability they're also excellent for beginners who are just learning to skate.

Skorpion Quadlines come in two size ranges: Small (4 - 7 US) and Large (8 - 12 US). They're easy to carry around as they don't have a massive boot attached to them - you keep your boots or shoes on your feet when you take these skates off!

My old skates were rusty, clumpy, ugly and slow. Oh, and the wheels kept seizing up too. Let's face it, they were complete rubbish and I hated them even then. They squeaked too. And I kept falling over in them. Still, my skating skills have improved since then from teaching my own kids to skate, so maybe just maybe a pair of Skorpions will soon be mine.
